  • Lactic acidosis: Most serious side effect caused by metformin is lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis happens when there is not enough oxygen in the body and too much lactic acid builds up in the blood. Dehydration and drinking large amounts of alcohol can bring on lactic acidosis. Metformin also worsens this state of lactic acidosis. Its symptoms include:
    • Muscle pain
    • Numbness in the arms & legs

Other general reported side effects

  • Minor side effects including diarrhea, nausea and abdominal pain.
  • Metformin does not signal the pancreas to release insulin due to which there is a little risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia) when taking this drug.

CAUSES OF LOW TESTOSTERONE

Testosterone is often termed as the MALE HORMONE. Testosterone is a steroid hormone from androgen group. It is the most potent of naturally occurring androgens. Testosterone plays a pivotal role in development of male reproductive tissues such as testis and prostrate and is also responsible for the development of the male sex characteristics such as deep voice, growth of body hair, increased muscle and bone mass. 

The medical condition when the testicles don’t produce enough of the male sex hormone testosterone is known as HYPOGONADISM. There are two types of Hypogonadism:

Primary: Also known as the primary testicular failure, it originates from a problem in the testicles. 

Secondary: This occurs when the Pituitary gland or the Hypothalamus fails to send signals to the testis to produce the hormone. 

Hypogonadism can be caused by an inherited trait or can occur due to some injury or infection. 

Causes of Primary Hypogonadism:

•Klinefelter’s Syndrome:  This condition is an inborn abnormality of X and Y chromosomes. A male normally has one X and one Y chromosome. In Klinefelter’s Syndrome two or more X chromosomes are present, which causes abnormal development of testicles in turn resulting in underproduction of testosterone.

Sometimes one or both of the testicles may not be descended at birth. If not corrected in early childhood, it may lead to malfunction of the testicles and reduced production of testosterone.

•Hemochromatosis: Excessive iron in the blood can cause testicular failure or pituitary gland dysfunction affecting testosterone production.

•Injury to the testicles: Because they’re situated outside the abdomen, the testicles are prone to injury. Damage to normally developed testicles can cause hypogonadism. 

•Cancer treatment: Chemotherapy or radiation therapy for the treatment of cancer can interfere with testosterone and sperm production. 

Causes of Secondary Hypogonadism:

•Kallmann syndrome. Abnormal development of the hypothalamus — the area of the brain that controls the secretion of pituitary hormones — can cause hypogonadism.

•Pituitary disorders. An abnormality in the pituitary gland can impair the release of hormones from the pituitary gland to the testicles, affecting normal testosterone production.

•HIV/AIDS. HIV/AIDS can cause low levels of testosterone by affecting the hypothalamus, the pituitary and the testes.

•Medications. The use of certain drugs, such as opiate pain medications and some hormones, can affect testosterone production.

•Normal aging. Older men generally have lower testosterone levels than younger men do. As men age, there’s a slow and continuous decrease in testosterone production.
