UNANI TREATMENT FOR PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT

Unani Treatment For Prostate Enlargement

Prostate enlargement is the most common age-related problem in men. Modern systems of treatment have described many causes and remedies of this disease. Unani system too has a description of the disease and the treatment. The description is in different ways. At some places, it has been described in symptomatic form while at other places it has been considered as a disease.

Prostate enlargement is largely attributable to hormonal change as associated with aging. A hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) tends to accumulate in the prostate causing cells to harden and enlarge and thereby creating resistance to the flow of urine from the bladder. This is a non-cancerous condition.

The main symptom in prostate enlargement is the inability to completely and freely urinate. Typically the afflicted man needs to get out of bed several times at night to urinate but finds his urine is minimal and often returns to bed with a full bladder. The long-term effects can lead to kidney, bladder, and urinary tract infections and in severe cases lead to permanent kidney damage.

unani treatment for prostate enlargement is considered as the science and art of healing. It is a noble profession of healing the suffering person. The system is popular in society because of its unique approach to preventive and curative aspects of health care.

unani treatment for prostate enlargement facilitates the body to regain or strengthen the balance. It follows the humoral theory that postulates the presence of four senses of humor in the body namely:

  • Blood (Dum)
  • Phlegm (balgham)
  • Yellow bile (Safra)
  • Sauda (black bile)

Before starting the actual treatment, the patient’s pulse is examined to know the dominant humor at that particular time. Depending upon the symptoms of patient urine and stool tests are also done.

Prostate enlargement has different names in Unani literature like Waram-e-unq-e-masana (swelling of the neck of urinary bladder), Insidad-e-mujra-e-masana (obstruction of the outlet of the urinary bladder) or Symptomatic description.

There are many single and compound drugs which are effective in the treatment of this disease. Mainly there are four types of unani treatments available for managing any disease:

  1. Ilaj bil tadbeer (regimental therapy):

It is a detoxification method that improves constitution of body by removing waste materials. Regimental therapy also protects health and increases defense mechanism of the body. Important techniques in regimental therapy include massage (dalk, malish), Turkish bath (hammam), exercise (Riyazat), leeching (Taleeq-e-Alaq) and venesection (incision of a vein for the removal or withdrawal of blood).

  2. Ilaj Bil Ghiza (dietotherapy):

As the name suggests, dietotherapy involves regulation of the quantity and quality of your diet. Unani physician may ask you to increase the intake of specific food that is helpful to alleviate symptoms of the disease.

  3. Ilaj bil dawa (Pharmacotherapy):

Natural drugs from plant, minerals and animal drugs are used in unani system. Potency and temperament of drugs are important consideration in unani treatment. The drugs are supposed to act according to their temperament e. hot, cold, moist and dry. Unani medicines are available in form of tablets, decoctions, infusion, Jawarish, Majoon, Khamira, Syrup and powder.

  4. Jarahat (Surgery):

Ancient physicians of an unani system were considered to be a pioneer in the field. However, at present only minor surgery is in vogue in this system.

Prevention of prostate enlargement by Ilaj bil Ghiza or dietotherapy

Unani system offers some tips for prevention of prostate troubles which include diet and lifestyle changes:-

  1. Low fat/high protein diet:

A healthy diet plays an important role in prostate health. Aim for a diet that is moderately high in proteins (44% of your calories should be protein) since a high protein diet may inhibit the production of (5-α-reductase) the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT. Also look for a diet that is low in carbohydrates, low in animal fats, and high in essential fatty acids. Look for whole, unprocessed foods and eat plenty of sunflower or pumpkin seeds each day. Add raw tomatoes to your diet.

  2. Push the fluids:

Drink plenty of fluids. Adequate fluid intake can help prevent bladder infections, cystitis and kidney problems that are often associated with an enlarged prostate.

  3. Increase your fiber:

More fiber in the diet may reduce the risk of prostate problems by lowering the levels of reproductive hormones in the body.

  4. Include soy in your diet:

Soy may decrease the chance of getting prostate problems by reducing troublesome cholesterol levels.

Lifestyle Changes:

  1. Schedule an annual prostate exam:

Annual prostate exams from doctors can help catch problems early and diagnose and treat any of the pre-existing problems.

  2. Maintain your ideal weight:

If you need to lose weight, do it. Studies show that men with 43-inch waist or greater are 50% more likely than normal-weight men to suffer from prostate enlargement.

  3. Abstain from alcohol:

Studies have shown that higher the alcohol intake the more likely a man suffers from prostate enlargement. So give up Beer & Alcohol. Caffeine and sugar should also be avoided or moderated.

  4. Keep your cholesterol down:

Free radical damaged cholesterol may play a role in stimulating the prostate cell formation that may cause an enlarged prostate so it is important to keep your cholesterol level within a healthy range.

With regard to the Unani treatment for prostate troubles, the Unani approach is essentially a constitutional and individualistic treatment. The Unani treatment is determined after evaluation of the patient’s case in detail. Various aspects of a patient’s lifestyle, personality, food habits, emotional makeup, personal and family history are evaluated appropriately to decide correct medicines to treat Prostate troubles. Thus, choosing Unani treatment for prostate enlargement can be beneficial for long-term effects. If you want Home Remedies for benign prostatic Hyperplasia

PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT TREATMENT

Prostate Enlargement Treatment

Prostate gland enlargement has become a very common disease in aged men. This disease majorly decreases the quality of life due to urination problems. Enlargement of prostate gland results in thinning of the urethra which is a tube that carries urine out from body. Due to this, which various prostate enlargement treatment strategies are searched by the affected persons.

Addressing the symptoms now can help avoid problems later. An untreated enlarged prostate may lead to urinary tract infections, acute urinary retention and kidney, and bladder stones. In severe cases, it can also lead to kidney damage.

Prostate Enlargement Treatment

WHAT IS CONSIDERED BY THE DOCTOR TO CHOOSE TREATMENT OPTION?

Doctor will consider several factors when treatment is adopted. These factors include:

  • How much your symptoms interfere with your life
  • Size of your prostate
  • Your age
  • Overall health
  • Any other medical conditions

WHAT CAN BE OPTED FOR PROSTATE ENLARGEMENT TREATMENT?

There are three main types of prostate enlargement treatment

  • Lifestyle changes
  • Medicines
  • Surgery

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

  • Urinate when you first get the urge. Also, go to the bathroom when you have the chance, even if you don’t feel a need to urinate.
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine, especially after dinner.
  • Don’t drink a lot of fluid all at once. Spread out fluids during the day. Avoid drinking fluids within 2 hours of bedtime.
  • Try not to take over-the-counter cold and sinus medicines that contain decongestants or antihistamines. These drugs can increase BPH symptoms.
  • Keep warm and exercise regularly. Cold weather and lack of physical activity may worsen symptoms.
  • Learn and perform pelvic strengthening exercises.
  • Reduce stress. Nervousness and tension can lead to more frequent urination.

MEDICINES

  • Alpha Blockers for BPH

This class of medications works by relaxing the bladder neck muscles and the muscle fibers in the prostate. The muscle relaxation makes it easier to urinate. You can expect an increase in urine flow and a less frequent need to urinate within a day or two if you take an alpha-blocker for enlarged prostate.

Alpha blockers include:

  • Alfuzosin
  • Doxazosin
  • Silodosin
  • Tamsulosin
  • Terazosin

Ø  5α-reductase inhibitors

This type of medication reduces the size of the prostate gland by blocking hormones that spur the growth of your prostate gland. Dutasteride and finasteride are two types of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors.

Ø  Medication combo

Taking a combination of an alpha-blocker and a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor provides greater symptom relief than taking either one of these drugs alone. Combination therapy is often recommended when an alpha-blocker or 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor aren’t working on their own. Common combinations that doctors prescribe are finasteride and doxazosin or dutasteride and tamsulosin. The dutasteride and tamsulosin combination comes as two drugs combined into a single tablet.

SURGERY

Invasive surgery for enlarged prostate includes transurethral surgery, which doesn’t require open surgery or an external incision. According to the National Institutes of Health, transurethral resection of the prostate is the first choice of surgeries. The surgeon removes prostate tissue obstructing the urethra using a resectoscope inserted through the penis during TURP.

Another method is the transurethral incision of the prostate (TUIP). During TUIP, the surgeon makes incisions in the neck of the bladder and in the prostate. This serves to widen the urethra and increase urine flow.

Ø  Laser Surgery

Laser surgery for enlarged prostate involves inserting a scope through the penis tip into the urethra. A laser passed through the scope removes prostate tissue by ablation (melting) or enucleation (cutting). The laser melts excess prostate tissue in photoselective vaporization of the prostate (PVP).

Holmium laser ablation of the prostate (HoLAP) is similar, but a different type of laser is used. The surgeon uses two instruments for Holmium laser enucleation of the prostate (HoLEP): a laser to cut and remove excess tissue and a morcellator to slice extra tissue into small segments that are removed.

Ø  Open Simple Prostatectomy

Open surgery may be required in complicated cases of a much-enlarged prostate, bladder damage, or other problems. In open simple prostatectomy, the surgeon makes an incision below the navel or several small incisions in the abdomen via laparoscopy. Unlike prostatectomy for prostate cancer when the entire prostate gland is removed, in open simple prostatectomy the surgeon removes only the portion of the prostate blocking urine flow.

Ø  Transurethral Microwave Thermotherapy

There are minimally invasive surgery options when drug therapy isn’t enough to relieve enlarged prostate symptoms. These procedures include transurethral microwave thermotherapy (TUMT). Microwaves destroy prostate tissue with heat during this outpatient procedure.

TUMT will not cure enlarged prostate but it cuts down urinary frequency, makes it easier to urinate and reduces weak flow. It doesn’t solve the problem of incomplete emptying of the bladder.

Ø  TUNA – Transurethral Needle Ablation Treatment

High-frequency radio waves, delivered through twin needles, burn a specific region of the prostate in this procedure. TUNA results in better urine flow and relieves BPH symptoms with fewer complications than invasive surgery.

This outpatient procedure can cause a burning sensation. The sensation can be managed by using an anesthetic to block the nerves in and around the prostate.

  • WATER-INDUCED THERMOTHERAPY

Hot water is delivered through a catheter to a treatment balloon that sits in the center of the prostate in water-induced thermotherapy. This computer-controlled procedure heats a defined area of the prostate while neighboring tissues are protected. The heat destroys the problematic tissue. The tissue is then either excreted through urine or reabsorbed in the body.

Talk with your doctor about the treatment approach that best suits your needs.

SUPPLEMENTS
